SH 1 reduced to one lane north of Wellington due to gas leak.
SH 1 North of Wellington near Paekakariki has been reduced to one lane due to gas repairs on a mainline valve station adjacent to the highway.
The gas repair at the Paekakariki North Mainline Valve Station has resulted in gas venting to the atmosphere. Although this is not causing any immediate safety concerns nor will it affect any gas supplies to Wellington and the lower North Island, as a precautionary measure, the New Zealand Fire Service are on the scene controlling traffic and to ensure safety protocols are in place in the immediate vicinity of the station.
During maintenance on the gas transmission pipeline to the Wellington region, a valve at the station developed a leak at 10am this morning, says Paul Goodeve, CEO for First Gas, who own and operate the gas transmission pipeline.
“As soon as the gas vent occurred we reacted as quickly and as safely as possible to initiate repairs to the pipeline valve,” says Mr Goodeve. ““We are responding by isolating this valve so we can safely effect a repair. We estimate the situation to return to normal by 4pm this afternoon. “
