Connection Process
All residential and commercial properties that front on to a Firstgas distribution pipeline can apply for a connection to that gas pipeline.
If you are in the Firstgas network area in Whangarei, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Central Plateau, Gisborne and Kapiti Coast, then check for the availability of natural gas at your property.
It is important that you advise us who your natural gas retailer will be when applying for your connection as we cannot process the application unless there is a nominated retailer. Check here for details.
You will need a qualified Gas Fitter to complete your connection and to install gas appliances into your home or business.
All installations must be undertaken by suitably qualified tradespeople and the installation has to be certified by a certifying gasfitter.
We can use an open trench to install a duct through which the gas connection can be inserted. This trench can be shared with other services as long as it meets our dig your own trench specifications.
Alternatively, depending on site conditions, we can complete a full construction connection. We will always aim to minimise any disruption to the site and in most instances we will be able to thrust or drill the connection between the existing pipeline and meter position. If either of these methods are not suitable for the site, we would open a trench and install our pipe.
We provide you with a quotation for installing a gas connection and we need you to sign and return the quotation to Firstgas (even if there is no charge for the connection) to get underway.
Once we have your accepted quotation, we will schedule the work and will contact you to confirm a completion date.
Complete the application form or phone 0800 NEW GAS (0800 639 427), or work in with your energy retailer, gasfitter or builder to submit a gas application made on your behalf.
Key information we need is determining where the gas meter will be located on your property as well as the distance from the gas meter location to the boundary fronting the gas pipeline.
Please remember to nominate the energy retailer from whom you will be purchasing the gas as well as specify the types of gas appliances that you are likely be installing.
