Every rider comes to Riding for the Disabled with their own abilities, challenges and goals. Through tailored programmes and interaction with horses, riders can build physical strength, confidence, independence and meaningful connections with others.
Firstgas, part of Clarus, is proud to support this work in Taranaki through the Clarus Community Partnership Fund. Since 2018, Firstgas has sponsored therapy horses at New Plymouth Riding for the Disabled, helping the organisation continue providing valuable physical, emotional and social support for local riders.
Riding for the Disabled is about much more than learning to ride. Working alongside registered therapists, coaches and volunteers, the organisation delivers therapy, education and recreation programmes designed around each rider's individual needs.

Almost 100 riders took part in the programme during 2025, with around 78 attending each week. New Plymouth Riding for the Disabled delivered nearly 2,000 riding sessions, supported by a dedicated team of staff and 58 volunteers who contributed an estimated 10,000 hours throughout the year.
The impact extends well beyond the arena.
Riders have shared how the programme has supported physical recovery following illness, improved balance, strength and mobility, reduced pain, built confidence and provided a renewed sense of purpose. For some, their journey has come full circle, becoming volunteers and giving back to the organisation that supported them. For many others, spending time with the horses is simply the highlight of their week.
