In an industry where accuracy is essential, the Firstgas Measurement Lab is quietly making a big impact. Based in New Plymouth, the lab brings together technical knowledge, hands-on experience and a shared commitment to quality helping ensure gas measurements and devices are accurate and reliable.
Accurate gas measurement has a direct impact on customers, energy providers and the wider energy network. When meters are properly calibrated, it helps ensure customers are billed fairly based on actual usage and enables energy companies to manage supply safely and efficiently.

A behind-the-scenes look at the lab
The Firstgas Measurement Lab is responsible for calibrating and testing all sorts of gas measurement devices—volumetric meters, pressure gauges, gas volume correctors, gas metering time of use devices, converters and more. These devices are used across residential, commercial and industrial settings to ensure accurate readings for energy use and delivery.
The Lab handles flow meters that range from very small to extremely large. From 0.25m³/hr all the way up to 2,500m³/hr, working with everything from individual household meters to larger industrial units. No matter the scale, the approach is the same - careful, consistent, and focused on getting it right.

Accredited for Accuracy
The lab is accredited by IANZ to ISO/IEC 17025 standards, covering the testing and calibration of volumetric gas meters, correctors and pressure gauges. This accreditation is an important part of the process as it confirms that the Lab follows robust procedures and meets recognised technical standards.
It also gives customers peace of mind, knowing that the readings they rely on for billing and compliance are based on independently verified methods.
A team built on skills, expertise and pride
“It’s a privilege to work alongside a group of people who care about the work they do.”
The lab is made up of experienced technicians, some who have been in the industry for over 40 years. They share a strong attention to detail and take pride in the quality of their work. Turnaround times are important too, especially when customers are waiting on test results. The team works efficiently, without losing sight of the need for accuracy.
Audrey Murphy, Manager of the Measurement Lab said, “It’s a privilege to work alongside a group of people who care about the work they do. Everyone brings something different to the table, and that’s what makes it work.”

Working Alongside Customers
The team works directly with customers to provide insight into the performance and condition of their equipment. They offer guidance on maintenance, report on findings and help identify when refurbishment or repairs might be needed.
Larger meter exchanges, such as those on the transmission pipeline, are carried out on-site, and the meters are then returned to the lab for testing, calibration and refurbishment or repairs.
Why Accuracy Matters
Gas measurement isn’t something most people think about—but it quietly supports many parts of the energy system. The work done by the Firstgas Measurement Lab helps make sure those measurements can be trusted. With solid processes, technical know-how, and a steady focus on quality, the lab supports the wider network and the people who rely on it every day.
