Firstgas is working with Omexon to better detect possible methane (natural gas) leaks early, on the Firstgas distribution network, using Street Evaluating Laser Methane Assessment (SELMA) vehicles.
Ryan Phipps, Manager, Gas Operations said, “The SELMA technology is fantastic. It allows us to cover so much more of the distribution network to conduct methane leak surveys, helping us to find leaks much sooner than the traditional foot survey approach.”
SELMA is part of Firstgas’ fugitive emissions’ reduction programme. A complete survey of the gas distribution network is completed using the SELMA vehicles every six months, ensuring leaks are not persisting undetected for long periods of time.
“This process allows for timely repairs to our networks, which means even minor leaks are not left for extended periods, reducing both our emissions and risks associated with gas leaks.” added Phipps.
With SELMA now well established, Firstgas is looking to the next stage of technology such as satellite methane tracking. This is undergoing early trials, which Firstgas has been involved in and is looking promising.
