Across New Zealand this Waitangi weekend, meals will still be cooked with gas, hot showers will be flowing and businesses that rely on continuous energy will keep operating. For most people, it all happens seamlessly. That reliability is the result of skilled people in our Firstgas Control Room monitoring, managing and coordinating the gas transmission network every hour of every day. Along with our scheduling team who works with the Control Room round the clock.
From powering the industries that drive our economy to fuelling the small moments that start the day, gas supplies energy to around 300,000 households and 15,000 businesses, supporting communities and industry across the country. When you turn on your cooktop, step into a hot shower or heat your home, gas is there when you need it, even on a public holiday.
Firstgas crew in the field
Based in the energy-rich region of Taranaki, Firstgas, part of Clarus, connects natural gas to homes, businesses and large industry across the North Island. We are responsible for the safe and reliable operation of approximately 2,500 kilometres of high-pressure gas transmission pipelines and stations, including the Māui and Kapuni pipelines.
One of the many critical parts of this operation is the Firstgas control room. Operating 24/7, the control room is the nerve centre of the gas transmission network. The team continuously monitors gas flows and pressures, manages critical infrastructure and coordinates activities across the network to ensure everything operates within safe limits.
When something needs attention, the control room team is ready to act. They work closely with field crews and other teams to manage maintenance, respond to issues and keep the system running smoothly, even during holiday periods when most of us are offline.
Without energy, life as we know it would grind to a halt. We take this responsibility seriously, ensuring everything we do safely, reliably and affordably delivers on the country’s energy needs. We are proud of the commitment, focus and professionalism of our Firstgas team who are helping to keep energy flowing not just this long weekend, but every day of the year.
